Green Mountain and KMW are constructing a large new data center on the Ingelheimer Aue in Mainz. Tobias Junglas and Ali Ünlü from the management of the data center company discuss the project’s status and the jobs being created there in an interview.
The project is progressing rapidly. The data center will consist of a total of three large buildings. Construction of the first building is well underway and is expected to be operational by 2025. So, we are on track.
Green Mountain is an internationally recognized developer and operator of large and sustainable data centers, with years of international experience in this field. KMW is a traditional energy producer with municipal shareholders. We both share a passion for technology and environmental responsibility.
Green Mountain and KMW are combining their expertise in this project with the aim of jointly constructing one of the world’s most sustainable data centers. This is achieved not only through the use of innovative technologies but also through the perfect utilization of existing infrastructure and synergies at the site. KMW provides both the grid connection and the required (eco-)power from its own production. Emergency power supply is ensured by KMW’s gas power plant park. This eliminates the need for the usually required diesel emergency generators, reducing the carbon footprint significantly. Cooling is provided through a direct connection to the nearby Rhine river. However, the data center sets new standards especially in the use of the waste heat generated by the servers: Instead of being released into the atmosphere, it is directly fed into the nearby heating network of Mainz. It is therefore a true “flagship project.” Sustainability is a central component of our company philosophy at Green Mountain.
Employees play a central role as they ensure the smooth and uninterrupted operation of the data center. Therefore, it is particularly important for us to build a strong team early in the project phase.
Our job postings are already available on the website. The goal is to have the first employees on board well before the data center goes live. This gives employees the opportunity to be involved from the beginning in the development of the data center and to actively participate in its commissioning. At the same time, we have sufficient lead time to prepare the team specifically for the tasks.
Primarily, we are looking for individuals with qualifications in electronics or mechanics. However, positions in facility management, administration, or IT are also available. Most importantly, we value employees who bring passion for the job and high reliability.
We attach great importance to thoroughly preparing our employees for their tasks. Therefore, we offer the opportunity to visit our data centers in Norway and participate in the internal “Green Academy,” where theoretical and practical knowledge is imparted.
Work in the data center is diverse and exciting. Our employees are responsible around the clock for smooth operation by monitoring systems, coordinating new installations, maintenance, and repair work, and solving problems when necessary.
As a data center operates continuously, many of the advertised positions involve shift work. We offer an attractive salary and a range of additional benefits, which have already been tested at KMW’s Mainz location. In addition to a pension plan, employees have the opportunity to participate in the job bike program, enjoy free on-site parking, access the KMW canteen at discounted prices, benefit from various health offerings, and much more.
We invite you to be part of this groundbreaking project! Apply now and join us in shaping the future of IT infrastructure in Mainz. We look forward to receiving your applications and the opportunity to jointly construct one of the most sustainable data centers in the world!
