Making a Data Center career
The Joint Venture
Norwegian data center company, Green Mountain, and German energy company, KMW, have teamed up to establish a new data center site in Mainz, Germany. Both companies have a 50% stake in a new joint venture. The data center will be supported by renewables from KMW’s portfolio and operated with the highest sustainability standards.
This collaboration combines KMW’s long expertise in sustainable heat utilization and its proximity to the district heating grid of Mainz with Green Mountain’s knowledge in data center design, construction, operation and marketing. A perfect match for providing secure, innovative, and sustainable data centers.
The Data Center
The first building of the data center is currently under construction adjacent to KMW’s existing power plants in Mainz. The full potential of the site includes three buildings with a total capacity of 54 MW.
Sustainability is at the core of this project
The data center will run on 100% renewable energy sourced from KMW’s wind and solar portfolio.
Emergency power will be supplied from gas turbine generators, making diesel generators redundant.
The river Rhine runs just outside the data center and will be the sustainable cooling source for the servers. Making the data center extremely energy efficient.
The produced excess heat will be channeled directly into the existing district heating grid, benefiting the city of Mainz while minimizing CO2 emissions.
All the prerequisites are in place to make this state-of-the-art data center one of the world’s most sustainable.
